The Kuwait Environment Protection Society, through Mohammed Shah, head of the Society’s bird monitoring and protection team, announced the organization of a celebration for “World Bird Counting Day” on Saturday, January 15, as part of its participation in the global agenda for this event, which hundreds of organizations and entities are keen to participate in annually, in accordance with the most suitable times for monitoring.
Shah explained that the society has prepared a full program for monitoring birds in the State of Kuwait, announcing that organizing the event, which will start next Saturday afternoon at Sulaibikhat Beach, is a suitable time to monitor many species. He emphasized that the location is compatible with the counting operations as it is one of the places of environmental sensitivity and a suitable habitat to attract large numbers of birds, which helps in counting them. He called on bird enthusiasts, photography enthusiasts, and the public to participate in the celebration, to which the Environment Society has invited many government agencies, civil organizations, and volunteer groups to participate.
He stressed that “the celebration is symbolic and carries a Kuwaiti message to the world that migratory and resident birds are protected and preserved in the country through the efforts of environmental agencies, organizations, teams and activists,” noting that “the annual monitoring of birds contributes to observing the disappearance of certain species and monitoring other new species, with the possibility of determining the increase and decrease in bird flocks from year to year, which helps in preparing practical reports on changes in migration patterns, statistical environmental counts and the extent of the impact of land exploitation on birds.” He mentioned that the results of the monitoring process will be recorded in the name of the State of Kuwait with the “BirdLife International” organization in its annual report.
He pointed out that “the Kuwait Environment Protection Society is keen to ensure that participants follow health requirements during the event, as it is held in an open location outside the walls, while adhering to social distancing between participants, in addition to the attendees” commitment to wearing masks to achieve the highest level of safety.”.
Mohammed Shah concluded by emphasizing that “the restructuring of the bird monitoring and protection team opens the door for joining the team in accordance with the society’s membership conditions, which provides them with many of the advantages offered by the society, whether it is organizing or participating in periodic conferences, exhibitions and multiple events, as well as providing opportunities for monitoring and documentation in sites that require entry permits for monitoring and documentation.”.
