The Kuwait Environment Protection Society considered that continuing the series of field visits it organizes for its Friends of the Environment team within the “Spring Environmental Field Training Program” enhances the methodology of qualifying the team, which consists of Kuwaiti youth of both genders, aged 8-18 years, from school students. According to Engineer Maali Al-Aqab, the Public Relations Officer of the Society, “The members of the team are the nucleus of the national cadres and elites in the specialized teams and committees of the Society, and the Society is keen on the comprehensiveness of their qualification through their participation in voluntary environmental work, and their awareness plan includes their field training.”.
M. Al-Aqab explained, “Professor Mohammed Al-Kharafi received the Friends of the Environment team at the “Saleh Farm for Fish and Shrimp Farming” in the Al-Wafra area, which falls within the scope of highlighting an honorable model of national initiatives that support and enhance Kuwaiti food security, as well as proper environmental awareness, praising the cooperation of Professor Mohammed Al-Kharafi.
She confirmed that “the field visit to the Salieh fish and shrimp farm included a comprehensive explanation by Professor Mohammed Al-Kharafi of the importance of aquaculture projects in providing a strategic reserve,” adding that “they have practical experience in cultivating popular Kuwaiti fish species, which will be revealed later.” She explained that “the Salieh fish and shrimp farm is an integrated farm, meaning it incorporates multiple activities, including the reuse of waste and water to reduce waste and the depletion of natural resources. Fish farming water is filtered and reused within the system, while the discarded water is used as natural fertilizer in irrigated agriculture to produce specific crops.”.
She noted that the visit included Professor Mohammed Al-Kharafi briefing the team members on the seabass farming process, reviewing some of the challenges facing fish stocks in our marine environment, including “the depletion of some economically valuable stocks due to high fishing operations over a long period. The high volume of bycatch in shrimp fisheries without benefiting from it and the resulting impact on biodiversity. The expansion of recreational fishing (angling) activity and the resulting use of unauthorized fishing methods. In addition to the deterioration of the aquatic environment and the disappearance of some suitable habitats for some types of fish and other marine life such as pearl oysters.”.
