Janan Behzad, Secretary General of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, affirmed that “contributing to building a sustainable environment lies in achieving balance in purchasing and consumption processes, which contributes to preserving biodiversity and ensuring the continuity of natural wealth for current and future generations.”.
This came during a scientific lecture organized by the Environmental Affairs Department of the Public Authority for Housing Welfare on the application of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), indicating that “Goal No. 12 of the Sustainable Development Goals focuses on the need to achieve a sustainable consumption and production pattern, and it aims to achieve a balance between the needs of the current generation and future generations.”.
Janan Behzad explained that “the scientific lecture was intended to motivate the reduction of excessive consumption, promote sustainable production, and improve the efficiency of resource use. This includes encouraging compliance with the law, stopping the purchase of single-use products, promoting effective waste management, and recycling resources to reduce pressure on the environment.”.
She considered that “achieving sustainable consumption requires raising consumer awareness and encouraging them to make informed consumption decisions, including supporting environmentally friendly products and initiatives that contribute to reducing the impact of consumption on the environment.”.
“Achieving Goal 12 is part of the transition towards a more sustainable and equitable economy,” said Janan Behzad. “The international community seeks to achieve this goal through international cooperation and the exchange of technology and knowledge to improve environmental performance and promote sustainable practices worldwide. Focusing on sustainable purchasing contributes to raising awareness among consumers about the impacts of their consumption on the environment. Consumers who are aware of the impact of their choices on the environment can contribute to pushing companies towards further improvements in their sustainable behavior.”.
The Secretary-General of the Environment Society concluded her lecture by saying that “achieving a balance in purchasing and consumption is of paramount importance for achieving a sustainable environment, and it has several aspects that contribute to providing great benefits to both the environment and society, such as preserving natural resources, reducing waste and pollution, and mitigating climate change.”.
