The Kuwait Environment Protection Society affirmed that the celebration of World Migratory Bird Day, which falls in the second week of May, coincides with its ongoing calls to provide safe passage routes for flocks of migratory birds and to refrain from harming them.<\/p>\n
In this regard, Janan Behzad, the society\u2019s secretary, said, \u201cThese birds are frequently targeted during migration periods when they are present in large numbers and face greater problems as soon as they land to rest or look for a nearby refuge to complete their journey. The most prominent of these problems is illegal hunting or selling them illegally on social media. Many birds are subjected to inhumane practices that have recently spread on social media. Studies published by the BirdLife International website indicate that about 20.1 million songbirds, 100,000 birds of prey, and one million waterfowl are killed annually in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, which has led to the disappearance of about 40 species from some areas.\u201c.<\/p>\n
Behzad explained that the risks facing migratory birds include overhunting, habitat degradation, pollution (oil, sewage, factories), unsustainable urban expansion, poorly planned energy projects, and disturbance of breeding sites (especially for seabirds). She pointed out that Article 149 of the Environmental Protection Law stipulates that anyone who violates paragraph one of Article 100 of Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014 shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year and a fine of not less than 500 dinars and not more than 5,000 dinars, or one of these two penalties, in addition to the confiscation of the seized wildlife and the tools used. She stated, \u201cThere are approximately 10,966 bird species in the world, of which 1,469 are threatened with extinction (13%). Of these, 517 have seen their populations decline due to overhunting, 1,017 are near threatened, and 50 billion birds migrate between breeding areas to spend part of their lives outside of them, including 5 Billions of birds migrate between Europe, Asia and Africa. Bird populations have declined in recent years and scientists estimate them at around 40% for waterfowl and 50% for birds of prey.<\/p>\n
Regarding the efforts of the Environment Society in this regard, the Secretary-General explained that \u201cthe Society had previously launched the \u201cLet Them Cross\u201d campaign, a national campaign to protect migratory birds in October 2013, to raise awareness of the importance of migratory birds and the dangers that threaten them during their passage, and the importance of Kuwait as one of the best migratory bird corridors in the world, in addition to the first season of the series of monitoring and documenting wildlife in the State of Kuwait, which the Society dedicated to birds through the \u201cEvery Day a Bird\u201d program, as well as documentary and scientific publications, perhaps the most prominent of which is the \u201cField Guide to the Birds of Kuwait,\u201d in addition to organizing many related environmental events.\u201d.<\/p>\n
For his part, Dr. Ibrahim Khader, Regional Director for the Middle East at BirdLife International, stated that the celebration of World Migratory Bird Day is an invitation for everyone to participate nationally and regionally in raising awareness about migratory birds and their importance. He added, \u201cMigratory birds know no borders and are exposed to many threats during their migration, such as illegal hunting, poisoning, and habitat loss. This is why we celebrate these birds twice a year, in spring and autumn, their migration seasons, to support conservation efforts and strengthen national, regional, and international cooperation.\u201d He emphasized, \u201cWe at BirdLife are pleased to partner with the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, BirdLife\u2019s partner in Kuwait. By doing so, they join many of BirdLife\u2019s partners in the Middle East and around the world who organize numerous events to highlight the importance of birds and the importance of joint cooperation between countries and organizations to protect them and their benefits.\u201d He explained, \u201cAs we have come to expect from the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, they collaborate with relevant national institutions in their leading and national role in protecting nature and biodiversity, including resident and migratory birds, so that Kuwait remains an oasis of safety and security for its citizens.\u201d And its inhabitants and its birds.\u201c.<\/p>\n
Janan Behzad, Secretary General of the Environment Society, noted: \u201cLarge numbers of migratory birds of various species pass through Kuwait\u2019s lands during migration seasons, especially with the onset of autumn and spring. The number of bird species that have been observed and recorded has reached 416 (of which more than 60 have hatched or nested). The Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in the State of Kuwait are selected according to internationally agreed criteria. For these areas to be selected, they must have real importance for bird conservation at the international level. They are chosen based on the abundance of species throughout the year or seasonally, in addition to the presence of globally threatened species, species with very limited distribution worldwide, and species confined to limited environments around the world.\u201c.<\/p>\n
She pointed out that \u201cthe sites of special importance to birds worldwide are selected according to internationally agreed criteria. In order for an area to be selected, there must be internationally threatened species, species with very limited distribution worldwide, large numbers of birds, and groups of species whose existence is confined to specific environments. Birds are among the best indicators of biodiversity and are an effective entry point for protecting natural environments. The flocks of migratory birds that pass through and arrive in the country\u2019s skies are counted by the bird monitoring and protection team of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, and are recorded annually with more than 250,000 birds during the autumn and spring journeys.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Behzad concluded: \u201cMany migratory, resident, marine, and terrestrial birds return to nature reserves and important bird sites. Several bird counts have been conducted, and bird species and numbers have been documented. In Al-Jahra Reserve alone, about 310 species of migratory birds and about 14 species of resident birds have been counted throughout the year. One of the best scientific references that helps in researching and identifying the birds of Kuwait is the book (Field Guide to the Birds of the State of Kuwait), which documents the migratory and resident birds in the State of Kuwait.
