Janan Behzad, Director of Programs and Activities and Board Member of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, believes that the best methods for engaging individuals in addressing climate change are \u201cenvironmental awareness, creating public programs that call for public participation in awareness events and activities, as well as increasing awareness surveys that measure awareness and at the same time deliver correct information, raising awareness on social media, in addition to workshops, dialogue seminars and training programs, direct involvement in initiatives and programs, and awareness and participation in decision-making.\u201d.<\/p>\n
This came during a lecture presented by Behzad entitled \u201cThe Role of Civil Society Institutions in Confronting the Risks of Climate Change\u201d, as part of the society\u2019s participation in the Gulf workshop organized by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society in conjunction with the General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on \u201cClimate Change Issues at the Gulf Level\u201d during the period from January 24-26.<\/p>\n
Behzad confirmed that the society, as the head of the Gulf Network of NGOs for Environmental Associations and a member of the Arab Network for Environment and Development \u2013 Raed, contributed to conducting a survey study to learn about the activities and achievements of members from public benefit associations in the Gulf and the Arab world, with the participation of 16 Arab public benefit associations, reviewing the most prominent experiences of those associations and highlighting the conferences and workshops that were organized in this regard, and pointing out the inclusion of the risks of climate change in the \u201cEvery Day a Picnic\u201d television environmental awareness program that the society produced as part of the series documenting wildlife in Kuwait and documenting the environmental monitoring of rains and floods and their effects on the State of Kuwait.<\/p>\n
Janan Behzad explained that \u201ccivil organizations in the Arabian Gulf region, through supporting the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the Green Middle East Initiative, are working to increase green spaces through afforestation, caring for nature reserves and paying attention to ecotourism,\u201d adding, \u201cThe traditional view of the Gulf region regarding the issue of climate change, renewable energy, and traditional fossil fuel energy sources has changed significantly in recent years, and the emergence of many projects related to the Green Middle East Initiative has made the issue of climate change a priority for environmental action.\u201d.<\/p>\n
She pointed out the importance of focusing on preserving the components of the environment by raising awareness and training national cadres, which is one of the most prominent activities of civil society organizations, which should be met with attention and exploited to raise the quality of Arab expertise. In addition, she pointed out that the lack of experience in the region and the lack of technical capacity did not prevent the Gulf countries from working on many initiatives (afforestation - mangrove planting - green buildings).<\/p>\n
Behzad highlighted some of the observations and recommendations, including: \u201cThe role of civil society in developing and implementing emergency plans is weak (50% for all participants), and climate change (rain, storms, floods, drought) threatens more than 90% of the participants in the survey. Addressing climate change and taking adaptation plans seriously, and providing innovative solutions to confront climate challenges in the Arab world, in addition to empowering civil society and specialists to monitor environmental changes and participate more effectively in mitigation plans, and the need to exchange Arab experiences and assess the situation after the acceleration of the intensity of events requires support for Arab organizations through official channels to work on joint Arab solutions that are feasible, and finally the need for more expertise in establishing working groups and teams to respond to climate change and platforms for monitoring and reporting on the state of the environment and the changes occurring to it.\u201d.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
