The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection joined millions around the world yesterday, Saturday, in the activities of the Earth Hour campaign, which is being organized this year in light of the spread and outbreak of the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n
Nawaf Al-Muwaile, coordinator of the climate change awareness and climate literacy campaign, confirmed that the association participated with millions around the world in the grassroots movement to raise the voice of planet Earth defenders online and to help ensure a cleaner, safer, and greener future for all. He added, \u201cMeanwhile, the State of Kuwait is facing many of the consequences of climate change in the world, such as desertification, a potential rise in sea level, an increase in temperatures, and the resulting losses in biodiversity. Moreover, these changes will have a direct or indirect impact on quality of life and health.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Al-Muwail explained, \u201cThe State of Kuwait contributed to the enactment of laws supporting the issue of climate change in the Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014 in many articles that focus on reducing the use of greenhouse gases, specifications for environmentally friendly buildings, rationalizing the consumption of water and electricity, and many other things such as dealing with risks and environmental management in the event of natural disasters.\u201d.<\/p>\n
A member of the Environmental Protection Association stated, \u201cEarth Hour 2020 witnessed a global gathering raising their voices to call for action on urgent environmental issues in their countries. The association emphasizes the importance of building the capacities of national cadres, whose efforts are highlighted in crises, to produce more studies and research to adapt to climate change and develop a future strategy to address the effects of climate change and put an end to environmental degradation.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Announcing that the Earth Hour celebration website registered millions of people online to participate in Earth Hour as never before, he pointed out that \u201cthe State of Kuwait, through the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, registered its participation, believing in the role that energy conservation contributes to in reducing gas emissions, as Kuwait recorded the highest greenhouse gas emissions from energy production, amounting to 46,533 gigagrams, according to the 2000 greenhouse gas emissions inventory.\u201c He emphasized that \u201dthe precautionary measures taken in the State of Kuwait regarding the emerging coronavirus, including a partial curfew, banning or reducing gatherings, calling for social distancing, suspending flights, suspending work in government agencies and many private entities for about a month, preventing the movement of public transport buses, and other measures, led to a reduction in energy demand, whether for electricity use in lighting workplaces or reducing fuel use, which was reflected in reducing the percentage of emissions and thus raising air quality levels.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Nawaf Al-Muwaile explained that \u201cin the midst of the global health crisis COVID-19, Earth Hour represents an expanded global campaign of solidarity for the planet, where global communities unite and organize Earth Hour from their homes. It is the largest global initiative for nature conservation, exclusively online for the first time in history. At this time of year, the world feels its concern for the environment by turning off the lights for one hour to reduce gas emissions. These circumstances represent the best time for solidarity and responding to challenges more creatively and working more collaboratively. This is why Earth Hour is distinguished this year by digital registration via the internet around the world.\u201d.<\/p>\n
He explained that \u201cthe natural systems we depend on for our lives are being destroyed faster than they can be regenerated, and they are the foundation for supporting societies and the economy.
