The Kuwait Environment Protection Society revealed some of the indicators of violations left by the camping season and observed in camping areas and the surrounding lands, announcing that among its effects are soil disintegration and the absence of vegetation and biodiversity, confirming the appearance of many young plants on the roads growing on top of earthen embankments and accumulated dunes resulting from the sandstorm.
\n\u201cAt the end of the season, and every year at the same time, the wilderness remains alone without its guests, and contains memories of waste, remnants of camps, and many obstacles that do not allow it to breathe and regain its vitality before the next season, which comes after seven harsh months with temperatures that exceeded fifty degrees Celsius last summer,\u201d said Janan Behzad, Secretary General of the Association.
\nBehzad explained that \u201cthe camping period in the spring season is one of the human uses that negatively affect the desert environment, as it leads to the breaking of the protective gravel surface layer and the erosion of the fine sediments underneath it by wind and wrong practices. These contribute, along with the natural conditions of the soil, its properties and composition, to not creating the appropriate conditions for its recovery and rehabilitation, which causes the soil to disintegrate and be easily eroded, and the appearance of gypsum layers in some areas.\u201d.
\nShe continued, \u201cMonitoring operations revealed blatant violations of the Environmental Protection Law in general in the northern and southern camping areas. These are accumulations of waste, which we are not surprised by over the years. Many signs of campers not adhering to the rules set by the law to preserve the environment were evident. The photos documented many violations left behind by those who finished their season and removed their camps, such as camp remnants of furniture and neglected tents, cement slabs, and bathrooms left as they are in the middle of the desert.\u201d She pointed out that \u201cthe law punishes anyone who sets up camps in the desert that affect the soil with a fine of up to 5,000 dinars, in addition to obligating them to remove the violation. These buried violations and transgressions appear at the time of removing the camps.\u201d.
\nBehzad added, \u201cIt is unfortunate that the land carries remnants of plastic waste for years in both the terrestrial and marine environments, which are reached by bags and water bottles through transportation and erosion. Parts of this waste are visible, while much of it is buried by sand movement, remaining for years within the sand deposits and becoming part of the soil layers.\u201d She declared that \u201creducing land degradation in Kuwait requires a broad vision and an applicable strategy in light of urban expansion and the misuse of land during the camping season and other seasons due to overgrazing and erosion.\u201d She added, \u201cAmong the main causes of desertification in Kuwait are overgrazing, the movement of cars, motorcycles, and ATVs on unpaved roads, and the lack of effective measures to curb sand encroachment. Combating desertification in Kuwait must be a priority in future development projects, as it is an issue that is escalating regionally.
