The Environment Society continues its specialized training program activities<\/p>\n
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab: Arab environmental media is timid<\/p>\n
The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection concluded the activities of the first week of the virtual specialized environmental training program, which it offers at its Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Environmental Training. The program includes 9 specialized courses offered by the Society over 4 weeks during the period from February 14 to March 11, with the participation of 10 experts concerned with environmental work in the State of Kuwait and the Arab world.<\/p>\n
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development at the General Union of Arab Producers affiliated with the League of Arab States and President of the Environment Association, presented the training program \u201cVisual Environmental Media\u201d over two days, during which she addressed three main themes: \u201cA series of documentary programs to document wildlife in the State of Kuwait,\u201d environmental media, and the General Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n
Regarding the activities of the first day of her training program, Dr. Al-Aqab said that she addressed the themes of the series documenting wildlife in the State of Kuwait and visual environmental monitoring. She began by highlighting the series\u201c seven-year seasons with a visual presentation of an overview of the first season (Every Day a Bird), the second season (Every Day a Plant), the third season (Every Day a Wildlife), the fourth season (Every Day a Fish), the fifth season (Every Day a Picnic), and the sixth season (Every Day a Picnic \u2013 On the Borders). She also discussed the extent to which these programs rely on documenting long hours of wildlife in different locations in the State of Kuwait, and highlighted the program\u2019s timetable and the extent to which those in charge of the series are interested in using attractive methods in the program to ensure that viewers are drawn to it. She also addressed environmental awareness flashes and short awareness films. The presentation showcased documentary program models and their main objectives, highlighting their portrayal of environmental aesthetics, scientific culture, and the integration of Kuwaiti dialect. It also emphasized the program's focus on showcasing diverse natural resources\u2014terrestrial, marine, and coastal environments\u2014and their role in fostering environmental citizenship. The presentation further highlighted the series' role in raising awareness about Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014, as amended by Law No. 99 of 2015, through its various episodes. It also addressed the contributions of national environmental experts to the program's success, the work of the program teams, and the association's partners in environmental protection, including governmental and non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and environmentally conscious individuals. The presentation outlined methods for measuring the program's success and its educational role, noting that Ministry of Education teachers are currently using the documentaries as part of their virtual classroom approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. The presentation explained that the program also covered the different types of documentation, their challenges, and the risks involved in this type of environmental documentation, as well as the tools and technologies used, including various camera types.<\/p>\n
On the second day, the training focused on two main axes to move from the local to the Arab level, in introducing environmental media, especially visual media, and its role in spreading environmental awareness. It also addressed its objectives and the factors for the success of environmental media, highlighting the role of this type of media in protecting the environment, and the methods it uses to achieve this, while also highlighting experiences in visual environmental media from the association\u2019s experience, as well as addressing the needs, challenges and obstacles facing visual, audio and print environmental media, in addition to new media through social media platforms.<\/p>\n
During her training program, Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab highlighted her observation of the scarcity and limited output of environmental media in the Arab world, which prompted her to initiate the establishment of the General Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development within the General Union of Arab Producers, operating under the auspices of the Council of Arab Information Ministers at the League of Arab States. This secretariat was established in 2017.<\/p>\n
Through dialogue and discussion sessions, Dr. Al-Aqab addressed the alignment of the Secretariat's objectives with the needs of the Arab world, which it expressed in numerous activities and the first and second Arab Environmental Media Conferences. These conferences produced some of the most prominent media and technical recommendations related to Arab environmental media, especially visual media. Perhaps the most prominent of these media recommendations are the following: \u201cThe necessity of intensifying media efforts regarding the importance and dimensions of the effects of wars and conflicts on the environment, and training media personnel specializing in the environmental field who are knowledgeable about employing media tools to present environmental issues clearly and transparently through courses, workshops, conferences, and forums, and highlighting in the media the importance of preserving the cultural, civilizational, and natural heritage of countries from destruction and looting during wars and conflicts, under the supervision of the relevant international organizations.\u201d In addition, there is a need for genuine partnerships between the government, civil society, companies, activists, research centers, local universities, and international organizations regarding environmental media.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
