In response to the image circulating on social media concerning the establishment of a construction project in some sites of geological and scientific importance, as well as sites with high environmental sensitivity, the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, through its specialized teams, monitored the environmental situation in those sites and places and confirmed the existence of those construction projects. The Society registers its own proposal for such projects in these sites because of their environmental and scientific returns as a promising ecotourism.<\/p>\n
While expressing its approval of advancing the development process in the country and launching housing projects, the association calls for and expresses reservations about their establishment in all environmentally sensitive areas, as they represent an influential element of the natural elements and heritage in the country. It calls for preserving some of these natural components and heritage or enclosing them as a scientific, historical, and geological landmark, stressing that environmental impact studies and assessments should be at the forefront of considerations and attention. The association directs its statement to the relevant and concerned authorities in the country to consider this as a guarantee for the protection and preservation of the country\u2019s natural and environmental heritage.<\/p>\n
The Environment Society explained the scientific aspects of these sites in its statement: \u201cThese coastal ridges are being destroyed without regard for their natural and historical importance. There are many solutions to prevent their loss, such as fencing them off and preserving them with informational signs for visitors, as they are a natural museum in their natural setting. Alternatively, they could be moved, or parts of them, to museums, universities, or even government institutions. This natural scientific landmark in the Khiran ridges should be preserved for future generations so that researchers and scientists can benefit from it, especially since its natural environment no longer exists. These ridges, or rocky outcrops, characterized the southern coast of Kuwait. In the Kuwaiti dialect, they are called 'banaya,' which refers to a series of ridges that were clearly visible from a distance. The height of these rocky outcrops ranged from 5 to 15 meters, and they consisted of marine and wind deposits from ancient beaches.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The association continued: \u201cThese rocky outcrops, known as the Khiran Ridges, contain the remains of marine organisms dating back to the late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. A scientific paper from Kuwait University, authored by Dr. Mohammed Al-Sarawi, Dr. Abdullah Al-Zamil, and Dr. Ibrahim Al-Rifai, was published in 1993. In it, the researchers concluded that this area reflects changes in the sea surface of the Arabian Gulf over 8,000 years. The oldest of these outcrops is over 23,000 years old.\u201d The association further noted that \u201cthe rocky outcrop consists of oolitic quartz sandstone, a rare marine sediment. It is essential to preserve this natural heritage, which holds within it the history of Kuwait\u2019s coasts and their former state. It is a source of much information useful for research and studies, and undoubtedly a means of understanding the past with its diverse environments and what life was like before urban development and the disappearance of many species due to human pressure or climate change.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Kuwait Environment Protection Society stated in its report that \u201cthe sea has been subject to fluctuations in elevation and elevation, and evidence of this was clearly present in the Al-Khiran area in the form of three hills. The oldest of these was located south of the open creek. The first and second hills differ from the third in their rock formation, which consists of deposits of oolitic limestone and quartz oolitic limestone, which are grains of calcium carbonate deposited as spherical grains.
