MP Dr. Hamad Al-Matar, Chairman of the Environment Affairs Committee, affirmed that \u201cthe volume of plastic use in the State of Kuwait during one month, both locally produced and imported, covers almost the same area as the country\u2019s high-density polyethylene. This places a great and historic responsibility on us to protect the environment through legislation. In this regard, I have submitted parliamentary proposals to replace all plastic bags with environmentally friendly alternatives or to use paper-based plastics.\u201c.<\/p>\n
This came during his participation in the virtual seminar \u201cKuwait Sea Free of Plastic\u201d organized by the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Environmental Training at the Kuwait Environment Protection Society under his patronage and in his presence, with the participation of about 50 participants from Kuwait, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the Arab Republic of Egypt and Germany, representing government agencies, civil organizations and Kuwaiti and Arab universities, through which experts presented recommendations and solutions.<\/p>\n
Dr. Al-Matar added, \u201cKuwait is considered one of the countries with the greatest marine wealth in the world, both in terms of nature and food. It relies on fish for food, and the quality of its fish is very distinctive, in addition to the level of marine life, most notably the coral reefs and rare turtles. All of this places a great responsibility on us, as we depend on drinking water from the sea, so the sea must be clean and free of organic and chemical pollutants. Plastic is the second greatest threat to the marine environment.\u201d.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that \u201cattending this seminar is part of social responsibility. There are public benefit associations and cooperative societies, and I hope that the head of the Union of Cooperative Societies will issue a decision to ban the use of plastic except for environmentally friendly bags. We have factories in Kuwait to produce environmentally friendly plastic bags, and there is no additional cost. What we need here is a legislator to enact the relevant laws and an initiator to bring the two desires together, in addition to the initiative from the Union of Cooperative Societies, which is responsible for more than 50 cooperative societies that produce no less than 5,000 tons per month, which is a very large amount, and that is from the society\u2019s bags, not to mention other places such as commercial complexes and malls. For my part, I will submit proposals for a law and a request when the sessions return in the next session in the Environment Committee to address this, and when the circle is complete, so that each of us has a role in legislation and government oversight. Until now, there are no environmental initiatives, so we need initiatives from civil society, and the Environment Society has started, and we need the rest of the public benefit associations and the Medical Society as well, considering that pollution has health and environmental harms.\u201d.<\/p>\n
For her part, the head of the Environmental Protection Association, Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, confirmed that \u201dthe association has successive programs and successive efforts in this regard, as it has often called for, urged, and warned all authorities in the country and the masses of citizens and residents about the consequences and dangers of marine plastic waste on the components of habitats and environmentally sensitive sites and what they contain of living organisms and elements of marine wildlife. In this context, the association has dedicated many field, theoretical, and awareness-raising activities to this issue.\u201d.<\/p>\n
She pointed out that \u201cthe association\u2019s annual Green Schools educational awareness program includes a focus on plastic waste, as well as the Beaches Safari program, which deals with many issues of environments and marine life. Undoubtedly, one of the most prominent aspects of these two programs is raising awareness of this issue among school and university students, volunteer groups, and the association\u2019s partners from civil organizations. As the association previously launched its awareness initiative, \u201cKuwait\u2019s Sea Life,\u201d three years ago, which includes many activities and events that reinforce its appeals and related efforts.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Dr. Al-Aqab added, \u201cWe are united on one goal: to gather opinions and direct them towards this important pivotal issue, as it is closely related to many of our natural and daily resources and needs. Perhaps the most prominent of these is preserving our fish stocks, as well as the rest of the marine life, in addition to the tireless and continuous effort to preserve Kuwait Bay, that vital source from which we in the State of Kuwait obtain our desalinated drinking water.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The head of the Environment Society explained that the participating experts put forward several proposed solutions in the form of final recommendations. Perhaps the most prominent of these were \u201cspreading environmental awareness among all segments of society in order to preserve the marine environment (Kuwait Sea), preventing the use of plastic and single-use plastic bags and replacing them with environmentally friendly bags (that can be used more than once), recycling plastic materials, making bags for carrying products from multi-use fabrics, developing national and regional plans to reduce marine plastic waste to focus and coordinate activities among stakeholders, in addition to directing graduate students to conduct more research on plastic in marine soil and seawater, then on marine organisms, and finally on humans.\u201d.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
