Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, considered that \u201cparticipating in the West Asia Regional Consultative Meeting (Stockholm+50) coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, constituted a turning point in recognizing the central role of the environment for human well-being and led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme.\u201d She explained that \u201cthe governments of Sweden and Kenya are holding the international meeting under the slogan \u201cStockholm+50: A Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All \u2013 Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity\u201d on the second and third of June with the aim of reaffirming the importance of multilateralism in addressing the planet\u2019s triple crisis \u2013 climate, nature loss and pollution. It will also serve as a starting point for accelerating the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Action, the Paris Agreement, and the post-2022 global biodiversity frameworks, in addition to sustainable and equitable post-COVID-19 recovery plans.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Dr. Al-Aqab explained that the invitation extended to the Kuwait Environment Protection Society to participate virtually in this meeting was to explain the development over 50 years in the environmental field and to reflect the role of civil society organizations after the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme by simulating the Society\u2019s role in this regard. She highlighted the Society\u2019s membership in numerous regional, Arab, and international organizations, its membership in the United Nations Environment Programme, and the convergence of the celebration of the Programme\u2019s establishment during the Stockholm meeting in 1972, noting that the Kuwait Environment Protection Society was established in 1974. She emphasized that the Society\u2019s path and that of the United Nations Environment Programme are very similar throughout a journey spanning five decades of diligent environmental work.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, she revealed the association's membership in several regional, international, and Arab organizations and their importance, in addition to its membership in the United Nations Environment Programme. She also discussed "some of the environmental initiatives that the association has accomplished over the years, which are the written awareness programs through the Environment Magazine, and the visual ones through the documentary series documenting wildlife in the State of Kuwait, in addition to environmental programs, lectures, seminars, meetings, and forums." She touched on "the Green Schools Program in detail, in addition to guiding students to study environmental sciences and specialize in environmental engineering," explaining the association's role in the UN initiative "International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, which is a very important international day.".<\/p>\n
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab highlighted \u201cthe importance of cooperation between civil society organizations and governments and its impact on the environmental outputs that are dealt with. The association\u2019s participation in legislation and the drafting of the Environmental Protection Law was discussed, in addition to its participation in decision-making through its membership on the board of directors of the General Authority for the Environment, and the constant consultation of the association\u2019s staff in the environmental committees of the National Assembly, the Municipal Council and the Governorates Environment Committee, in addition to the association\u2019s invitation to participate in the National Committee for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and other cooperation that had a positive impact on utilizing the capabilities of staff in all government agencies according to their specialization for the benefit of the environment and its protection, such as the Ministry of Interior, in addition to research, military, environmental and executive bodies and others.\u201d.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
