The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection confirmed that the celebration of World Bird Count Day included several workshops to convey the most important goal, which is the need to protect and clean the beaches and reduce plastic waste in them in order to preserve the biodiversity in this environment.<\/p>\n
She noted that a photo exhibition showcasing various types of Kuwaiti birds, including birds of prey, seabirds, waders, and others, both resident and migratory, was organized to introduce the public to the beauty and diversity of these birds, reflecting the biodiversity of the State of Kuwait. Dr. Al-Aqab explained that another activity was "an awareness workshop on the environment and biodiversity in the State of Kuwait, with a focus on birds. This activity was conducted by the Friends of the Environment team at the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, with at least 20 members present to welcome the participating children and provide education, awareness, and training through several workshops.".
\nShe explained that the Friends of the Environment team participated in a workshop that consisted of coloring books of Kuwaiti birds. A group of birds with different characteristics were chosen to showcase the diversity of bird species found in the State of Kuwait, and some scientific information was included on the same page that was being colored. She noted that the second workshop involved coloring wooden houses for small birds to help the birds to nest and to facilitate obtaining a suitable place to make nests. The child colors the houses during the activity and receives simple information about them and their importance, and then takes them with him and hangs them in the garden of the house to receive the birds in them. <\/p>\n
She mentioned that the third workshop involved coloring and identifying different types of feathers. One of the most important pieces of information the children learned was how to distinguish between feathers from the right, left, or tail. This activity was very enjoyable, allowing children to identify the location of a feather based on its shape and characteristics. She added, "One of the volunteers also drew pictures of some of the birds seen that day on stones, seashells, and other shells." She further explained, "Among the interesting techniques used in the event, which contributed to the audience's enjoyment, was a device that could be attached to binoculars, allowing participants to photograph what they saw through the binoculars using their phones. The participants captured several photos that they shared on social media platforms like Instagram and other photo-sharing apps.".
\nThe association organized its annual celebration of World Bird Count Day with the participation of birdwatchers, enthusiasts, and experts, as well as representatives from government agencies, civil organizations, volunteer groups, photography enthusiasts, student groups from the 12th season of the Green Schools Program, the association's Friends of the Environment team, and the general public. The association added that organizing such activities is a contribution to international environmental events aimed at supporting environmental initiatives and strengthening its community role. Furthermore, it aims to instill environmental awareness among the public regarding the importance of preserving the country's wealth of migratory and resident birds. The association explained that the diverse participation from government agencies, civil organizations, volunteer groups, and the large number of young people and families in the bird count celebration reflects and reinforces the importance of environmental awareness in Kuwait. It noted that field activities attract participants of all ages and backgrounds, which is what the association strives to achieve through its numerous programs and activities designed to appeal to different age groups.<\/p>\n
For his part, Mohammed Shah, head of the bird monitoring and protection team at the association, confirmed that the timing and date of bird counts vary from country to country depending on factors that may affect their stable presence and, consequently, the possibility of monitoring and counting them. He pointed out that the best time for bird counting is during the winter bird counting period in Kuwait, when bird migration is absent or has ceased, i.e., during January and February. Regarding the counting methods and mechanisms implemented by the team during the World Bird Count celebration, Mohammed Shah explained that they are distributed across monitoring stations in various areas and through occasional observations. He noted that thousands of birds were documented during the celebration, specifying that the birds observed included the Greater Owl, Grey Heron, Merlin, Common Eurasian, Kentish Plover, Common Eurasian, and Common Eurasian.
