In celebration of the golden jubilee of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, which falls on Sunday, March 31, Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, Chairperson of the Board of Directors, announced the launch of a series of programs and events this year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Society's establishment. She emphasized, "Nearly 50 years ago, a group of national figures concerned with environmental issues came together to establish a Kuwaiti civil organization that would unite environmental efforts under one umbrella, recognizing the importance of the environment and its preservation. On March 31, 1974, it was officially registered as the Society for Environmental Protection, later changing its name to the Kuwait Environment Protection Society to embody its vision of supporting the values of environmental citizenship and promoting the concept of environmental volunteerism," and its mission of providing environmental awareness, projects, training programs, and documentation to all segments of society and age groups.".<\/p>\n
Dr. Al-Aqab added: \u201cSince the launch of the society\u2019s journey, the efforts of its elite and national cadres in the specialized volunteer teams and committees have converged on a number of goals and objectives, including: protecting the environment in the territory of the State of Kuwait, combating the causes of pollution in all fields, gathering and coordinating the efforts of those interested in environmental affairs, taking all possible preventive and remedial measures against pollution, working to create a scientific mindset, legal legislation and administrative regulations that achieve environmental safety, and protecting the country\u2019s natural resources, in addition to conducting scientific studies and research, paying attention to the educational, media, social and cultural aspects related to the environment, and achieving an effective contribution to raising citizens\u201c awareness and raising their scientific and cultural environmental level with regard to air and soil pollution, and protecting the country\u2019s natural resources in cooperation with the competent authorities.\u201d.<\/p>\n
She explained that \u201cthe Society has a seat on the Board of Directors of the Environment Public Authority, being one of the oldest Arab and Gulf civil society organizations, in support of Kuwaiti volunteer and community roles and participation in environmental decision-making.\u201d Regarding regional and international memberships and participations, she stated: \u201cThe Society holds active and distinguished memberships in Gulf, Arab, and international environmental organizations and bodies, including the World Earth Day organization, BirdLife International, the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED), the United Nations (UN), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Birdlife International, the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED), the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction (GNDR), and membership in the Regional Advisory Group (West Asia) for Disaster Risk Reduction.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The head of the Environmental Protection Society added that \u201cthe Society has a large file in the field of national and foreign relations, including membership in national committees specializing in environmental affairs. The Society has also signed many memoranda and cooperation protocols with Kuwaiti and Arab governmental bodies and civil organizations. Over the past fifty years, the Society has contributed many achievements on more than one level. At the Gulf regional level, she said: \u201cThe Society, along with a select group of Gulf environmental societies, established the Gulf Network of NGO Environmental Societies in 2000, and I head the executive office of the Network, which coordinates the work of civil society societies and organizations concerned with voluntary environmental work in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Regarding international achievements, she said: \u201cThe society took the initiative to demand the adoption of the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflicts, which coincides with the anniversary of extinguishing the last Kuwaiti oil well that was ablaze as a result of the brutal Iraqi occupation. This was done with the support of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and UN Resolution No. (56\/4) was adopted in 2001, with the State of Kuwait undertaking the task of promoting it annually and globally. The society leads this task locally through the campaign to promote November 6, where it organizes an annual event in which many government agencies, civil organizations, Kuwaiti experts, and ambassadors of sisterly Arab and friendly foreign countries participate. One topic is chosen annually to be addressed by experts and representatives of agencies and organizations.\u201d.<\/p>\n
On the educational front, Dr. Al-Aqab explained the society's educational and awareness-raising role through the Green Schools Program, stating: \u201cThis is an educational and awareness-raising program launched by the society in 2010 for 14 consecutive years for students and teachers in private Ministry of Education schools. The program includes scientific and practical components annually, benefiting over 100 schools and 3,000 students through its lectures, workshops, and discussion sessions. In addition to environmental clubs, the society plays a significant role in instilling sound environmental concepts and behaviors in school students, as well as reinforcing the concepts of volunteer work. The society participates annually in equipping approximately 15 environmental clubs in public Ministry of Education schools.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab added: \u201cAmong the most important achievements at the legislative level is that the society participated in the legislation, drafting, and review of the articles of the Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014 and amending some of its provisions No. 99 of 2015, in addition to working with the working groups to develop the executive regulations for the law in a manner that is appropriate for protecting the environmental situation and conditions in the country.\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegarding the most important achievements of the last decade in the field of environmental awareness,\u201d she pointed to \u201cthe society\u2019s methodology and mechanism in the field of environmental media through the establishment of the documentary series of programs to monitor wildlife in the State of Kuwait, which the society launched in 2015, and the production by the Environmental Media and Documentation Center of nine seasons with a total of no less than 250 television episodes. The series covers all components and elements of wildlife in the State of Kuwait, and reflects its beauty, accompanied by a call for protection and preservation of it. It is shown within the program plan of Kuwait Television in its Ramadan cycle annually, and it is translated into English to be shown on various channels throughout the year. The series has won many awards in international festivals, and finally it was adopted as a scientific resource supporting the educational curriculum and trusted by the Ministry of Education, to be used within the framework of the Ministry\u2019s curriculum plan since 2020.\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the same context, she stated: \u201dThe society established the Environmental Media Committee in the Ministry of Information, where the society submitted an initiative to the Ministry of Information to establish an official committee that frames, organizes and deals with environmental media affairs in the State of Kuwait.\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the area of disseminating accurate environmental culture and knowledge through application and training, Dr. Al-Aqab noted that \u201cthe Society established the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Specialized Environmental Training in 2019 to enhance employees\u201d skills and develop their capabilities in environmental and knowledge-based skills across various scientific and administrative fields. This helps them achieve outstanding performance in their roles. The Center provides customized training services for individuals, companies, and institutions to meet their needs in areas such as sustainable development, leadership development, project management, and others, with the aim of enhancing business effectiveness and increasing productivity. The Center offers online training and distance learning, allowing trainees from all over the world to participate. It aims for the continuous development of training programs and the adoption of the latest methods to deliver specialized training materials through the Society and its certified trainers in various environmental fields.\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the same context, she pointed to \u201cExpert Workshops, which is a reliable training platform in which Kuwaiti and Arab experts from Kuwaiti and Arab university professors participate, presenting their visions and proposals towards contemporary environmental issues, and university students, teachers, mentors and the general public are trained.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The head of the Environmental Protection Council explained that the society's 50-year program includes numerous specialized teams and committees, each carrying out dozens of annual activities with the help of young volunteers. These teams and committees include the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Specialized Environmental Training, the Wildlife Protection Committee, the Bird Monitoring and Protection Team, the Environmental Media and Documentation Center, the Photography and Documentation Team, the Environmental Programs and Activities Department, the Governorates Environment Committee, the Scientific Publications Committee, the Friends of the Environment Team, the Sea Turtle Protection Team, the Environmental Monitoring and Complaints Follow-up Team, the Diving Team, the Youth Environmental Club, and the society's library.
