In order to strengthen the partnership between academic institutions and environmental sectors in the State of Kuwait, the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, in cooperation with the Department of Science at the College of Basic Education, organized a series of scientific field visits, which included the Ahmed Al-Jaber Oil and Gas Exhibition, the Al-Shamiya Nature Reserve, and the Kuwait University Herbarium.<\/p>\n
These visits aimed to link the theoretical aspect with practical reality, and to enhance the skills of faculty members and researchers in the fields of biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and joint scientific cooperation.<\/p>\n
The visit to the Ahmed Al-Jaber Exhibition included learning about the history of the oil industry in Kuwait, from the geological formation of oil to the stages of refining and export. During the visit to the Al-Shamiya Reserve, the delegation learned about the voluntary efforts to protect local ecosystems, and the importance of awareness programs in promoting sustainable environmental behaviors among different segments of society.<\/p>\n
The visit to the Kuwait University herbarium included learning about plant specimen preservation and documentation techniques, which enhances the understanding of local plant diversity and supports scientific research in this field. The herbarium is a specialized center for preserving dried plant specimens according to precise techniques, with comprehensive documentation that includes the environmental and geographical classification of plants, making it an approved scientific reference for researchers and students.<\/p>\n
Visitors had the opportunity to learn about the methods of sorting, preserving, and classifying plants, as well as to view more than 22,000 plant specimens from Kuwait and neighboring countries. The delegation also toured the modern herbarium facilities, including the examination hall, drying room, and botanical library, which contribute to supporting training and research programs aimed at documenting local plant life and studying biodiversity in the Kuwaiti environment.<\/p>\n
During another visit to the Al-Shamiya Reserve, which is managed by volunteers, the academic delegation learned about the volunteer efforts underway. These efforts include planting various types of plants and trees suitable for the Kuwaiti environment, such as neem, ghaf, and sidr trees, as well as using recycling techniques to improve soil quality. The delegation also learned about the awareness programs organized by the reserve, which target different segments of society, including children and youth, to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices.<\/p>\n
In a statement on this occasion, Dr. Qais Abdulrazzaq Majeed, Head of the Science Department at the College of Basic Education, said: \u201cLife is going through a real crisis today, as we live in a time that is witnessing an accelerating deterioration of ecosystems. Documenting wildlife, as in the Kuwait University Herbarium, represents an important step towards preserving the natural and plant heritage for future generations, and contributes to building a strong environmental knowledge base that supports sustainability paths.\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a related context, Jenan Behzad, Secretary General and Director of Programs and Activities at the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating: \u201cThese visits are part of the Society\u2019s strategic direction aimed at strengthening institutional environmental culture and linking the academic framework with field practice, in accordance with the principles established by international agreements on biodiversity and sustainable development, such as the Rio Convention and the Ramsar Convention. These efforts also align with the State of Kuwait\u2019s commitments stipulated in Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014 and its amendments, which emphasize the importance of environmental awareness and education as part of environmental governance tools.\u201d.<\/p>\n
