The Kuwait Environment Protection Society, represented by birdwatcher Athari Buhamad, a member of its bird monitoring and protection team, participated in a bird photography and observation trip to Turkey. The trip included local and Gulf observers and was supervised by bird guide and observer Omar Al-Turki. Athari Buhamad stated, \u201cThe trip lasted six days and covered various areas in Bursa Province, including mountainous and coastal regions, as well as some nature reserves and lakes. One of the main objectives was to observe birds that do not visit Kuwait, and those that are difficult to spot in Kuwait during their migration. We also wanted to witness and appreciate Turkey\u2019s commitment to environmental protection and wildlife conservation, particularly for birds.\u201d She added, \u201cOne of the most important bird sightings I wanted to observe was that of eagles, especially the bearded vulture, which is not typically seen in Kuwait. This bird inhabits mountains and high altitudes, and I was able to clearly spot it and take some excellent photographs.\u201d She continued, \u201cThis bird is crucial for nature conservation. It feeds on carrion and bones, clearing away decaying remains and helping to keep the ecosystem free from disease.\u201d The member of the Environment Society explained, \u201cBeared vultures patiently observe and wait on the edge of cliffs for other animals to eat, avoiding competition for food scraps. They often feed on old carcasses and their remains, removing even the smallest unwanted scraps that others don't consume. Their stomachs secrete acids that dissolve bones. Some call it the \u201cbone breaker\u201d because of its behavior with bones it cannot swallow. It catches them, soars to the top, and drops them onto rocks to break and crumble before eating them.\u201d She continued, \u201cThis trip was distinguished by the sighting of several species added to my list of observed birds for the first time. In addition to the bearded vulture, there was the black vulture and other birds of prey, as well as the tawny owl, various types of woodpeckers, the purple heron, the white and black storks, and the pygmy cormorant.\u201d She noted, \u201cWe also observed numerous goldfinches and various other species, bringing the total to 79 bird species, 27 of which are new to my list.\u201d She explained, \u201cThese trips are important for birdwatchers, as they increase their knowledge and awareness of different bird species not typically seen in Kuwait. They allow them to observe the birds\u201d behavior, as they behave naturally and do not feel threatened in these areas. They also give us the opportunity to observe migratory and passing birds in Kuwait, some of which breed in Turkey, and we may see their nests during the summer.\u201c Athari Buhamad concluded: \u201dMy passion for birds has increased since I joined the Kuwait Environment Protection Society and the Bird Monitoring and Protection Team, which has given me knowledge of bird species and facilitated monitoring methods in nature reserves in Kuwait.
