The Kuwait Environment Protection Society announced the conclusion of its participation in the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention (Wetlands), held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from July 23 to 31. Ms. Evelyn Nolofo, Zimbabwe's Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, announced the conference's conclusion in a speech thanking all attendees and affirming Zimbabwe's readiness to provide all necessary support for the successful implementation of the Ramsar Convention programs. Dr. Manaf Behbehani, Chairman of the Society's Wildlife Protection Committee, represented the Society at the conference. In this context, Dr. Behbehani emphasized that "the conference featured numerous events and sessions and produced a diverse set of recommendations." He noted that among the decisions taken by secret ballot was the approval of Ukraine's request regarding the destruction of wetlands during the war with the Russian Federation. This prompted the Russian Ambassador to Zimbabwe to announce, during the conference's opening session, Russia's withdrawal from the Ramsar Convention due to the inclusion of Ukraine's proposal in the conference program. He explained that \u201cthe most important decisions of the conference were the approval of the Strategic Plan for the Convention 2025-2034, which aims to increase the number of wetlands registered under the Ramsar Convention, work to protect protected environments from destruction and loss, and build and develop human capacities and research capabilities while providing the necessary material resources, as well as approving the holding of the 16th Conference in the Republic of Panama.\u201d Dr. Behbehani noted that \u201cin addition to the main sessions, many events were held by subcommittees, member states, and international organizations, during which scientific programs and activities related to the management and protection of wetlands and approved scientific programs were presented.\u201d He added that \u201cmany member states, international organizations, bodies, and NGOs held exhibitions of varying sizes, showcasing their activities and programs, which added to the efforts made and the information available to conference participants.\u201d He noted that, \u201cAs part of the side events, Dr. Wafaa Behbehani, a member of the Kuwaiti delegation, delivered a lecture on the efforts being made to plant mangrove trees along some Kuwaiti coasts.\u201d He added that, \u201cThe Kuwaiti delegation coordinated with the delegations of the participating Gulf countries, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, in voting on the recommendations.\u201d Dr. Munaf Behbehani explained that, \u201cThe 15th Ramsar Conference emphasized the importance of preserving wetlands and international cooperation for their conservation, particularly in the areas of education and scientific research to develop and protect wetlands.
