Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, announced her virtual participation in the meeting of the Regional Advisory Group for North Africa and West Asia of the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction (GNDR). She noted that the Advisory Group comprises civil society organizations from 13 Arab countries, and that the Society is a member of both the Advisory Group and the GNDR network. Al-Aqab, the head of the association and the regional advisor to the International Network of Civil Society Organizations, said that \u201cthe meeting of the advisory group of civil society organizations, which includes organizations from (Jordan, Tunisia, Palestine, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco and Mauritania), addressed the presentation of the group\u2019s new strategy, in addition to her presentation as head of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, explaining the roles and tasks of the National Committee of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction (GNDR-KUW) in the field of crisis management, as well as presenting the many efforts and activities undertaken by the Kuwaiti Association for Crisis and Emergency Management and the Kuwaiti Association for Protection from Fire Hazards, which are members of the International Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction.\u201d She added: \u201cThe meeting witnessed the presentation of several successful experiences in the countries represented by civil organizations related to the Regional Advisory Group for North Africa and West Asia of the Global Network GNDR, in addition to the group members discussing aspects of their activities in the field of disaster risk reduction, whether they presented their activities locally and nationally or participated and engaged regionally and internationally in conferences, forums and workshops.\u201d She stated that she \u201creviewed the work of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society in this regard over the past three years, as well as its efforts to encourage the participation of Kuwaiti civil society organizations and obtain prior approvals before the Kuwait Society for Crisis and Emergency Management and the Kuwait Society for Protection from Fire Hazards joined the GNDR international network.\u201d She noted that she presented the efforts of the Crisis and Emergency Management Society by reviewing the \u201cZahib\u201d initiative and discussing its provision of relevant training courses and workshops. She also presented some of the services offered by the Kuwait Society for Protection from Fire Hazards, introducing their annual conference and awareness courses, in addition to discussing the future programs and plans of both societies. During the meeting, Dr. Al-Aqab addressed the integration of efforts between the \u201dNational Committee for Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction\u201c and the Society through cooperation in numerous related activities and projects. The National Committee works to contribute to the development of national strategies and plans for civil society to reduce disaster risks, while the Society contributes to environmental awareness and the implementation of programs related to reducing environmental risks resulting from disasters. She explained that \u201dthe Environment Society conducts numerous events and activities related to disaster risk reduction on a regular and annual basis.\u201c In response to disasters, the organization provides environmental awareness programs at the national level, educating the public on the importance of environmental conservation and mitigating potential environmental risks, such as floods, desertification, and pollution. It also participates in developing plans and programs adopted by the National Committee of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction, contributing its expertise and proposals in the environmental field. The organization announced that it collaborates with numerous governmental and community entities in implementing projects aimed at reducing environmental disaster risks, such as afforestation and desertification control initiatives. The association conducts specialized environmental training programs for volunteers and those working in disaster risk reduction. Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab presented examples of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society's successes in this regard, including the "Flood Risk Reduction Symposium," held in 2019 when Kuwait experienced a rainy year. The symposium, organized to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, focused on reducing flood risks in Kuwait and included a study on the geomorphological and environmental impacts of floods. She added, "The association also implements awareness programs through various media outlets to raise awareness about environmental hazards and how to deal with them. Furthermore, the association participates in national committees specializing in disaster risk reduction." It is worth mentioning that the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) is the largest international network of civil society organizations working to enhance the resilience of communities most at risk of disasters. Member organizations communicate and cooperate with each other, benefit from capacity-building opportunities, implement global projects, and participate in research and advocacy initiatives.
