The head of the association lectures on the role of Kuwaiti civil society organizations in crisis and disaster management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wajdan Al-Aqab, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, stressed the importance of the role of Kuwaiti civil society organizations in managing crises and disasters, pointing out in a scientific lecture on this subject the multiplicity and diversity of \u201cenvironmental protection\u201d programs that include applied and field axes and mechanisms that enhance and support participation with governmental and institutional efforts in the fields of crisis and disaster management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
During her lecture, \u201cThe Role of Civil Society Organizations in Crisis and Disaster Management,\u201d at the sixth edition of the \u201cHealth, Safety and Environment\u201d conference this year, Al-Aqab said that she addressed the association\u2019s multiple and diverse roles in this field, pointing to many of those roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this regard, she indicated that the association reviewed and revised many of the articles of Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014, including Article 118 of the 181 articles, which specifies the method of dealing with crisis management in the state, stressing that Article 172 gives the right to public benefit associations concerned with environmental affairs and to citizens alike to follow up or report any environmental violations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The association listed its experience in crisis management, reviewing the fire at the used tire landfill in the Rahya area and its follow-up for 3 days, in addition to the fire at the industrial plots in Amghara and the factors that caused it to ignite, which were the lack of clear discipline for security and safety conditions in the area, and this is consistent with the main objective of the conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wajdan Al-Aqab reported that she \u201caddressed the role of civil society, represented by the association, in removing the scrap metal in Amghara, following up diligently for three years. Then, after the removal, community awareness was raised within the schools of the area to educate citizens about the importance of staying away from that area, as it was removed but not completely cleaned, in order to preserve their safety.\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She stated that the association actively participated in the \u201cDecisive Eagles\u201d military exercise in 2015, adding: \u201cPerhaps the best thing that can be cited about this exercise is the ability to establish the first civilian crisis management unit in this military exercise in its thirteenth edition, which is a contribution from civil society to enrich institutional work in crisis management, and this resulted in the association being invited to participate in the preparatory meetings for the Decisive Eagles 2017 exercise.\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The head of the Environmental Protection Association touched on the preparations for preparing and signing the first memorandum of understanding between the association, as a civil society organization, and a sovereign ministry, namely the Ministry of Interior. She pointed to the other roles that the association contributed to in managing crises, including highlighting the largest environmental disaster, which was the Kuwaiti oil well fire disaster in 1991. She added: \u201cAs a civil society organization, this led to highlighting this crime caused by the war, and this resulted in intensive efforts under the special patronage of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah \u2013 may God protect him \u2013 which resulted in the United Nations unanimously adopting November 6th of each year as the \u201dInternational Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflicts,\u201c in addition to encouraging people to respect and appreciate the tremendous efforts in crisis management by some entities.\u201c. <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
