The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection received a delegation from the Japanese Embassy in Kuwait to discuss strengthening the frameworks of joint environmental cooperation that began and continued for more than 20 years.
The Secretary-General of the Association, Jenan Behzad, said that the visit of the Japanese Embassy delegation to the Association’s headquarters coincides with the 60th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between the State of Kuwait and Japan and the 20th anniversary of the Association’s participation in the Embassy’s annual environmental program (Sea Turtles), which both sides are keen to organize annually with the participation of many bodies, civil organizations and volunteer groups in the State of Kuwait.
Behzad explained that the meeting, which was chaired by Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Association, and attended by her, along with the First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in the country, Mina Anouye, addressed the role of civil organizations in following up on environmental issues included in the work programs of regional organizations, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
She added that the Japanese Embassy requested the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection’s support for the Japanese candidate in the upcoming elections for “Regional Coordinators of the International Union for Conservation of Nature,” adding that “the International Union for Conservation of Nature and its Resources is the world’s leading environmental organization, headquartered in Switzerland, and includes more than 200 governments, 1,000 non-governmental organizations, and about 10,000 volunteers. Its work is based on scientific research and unifying efforts to combat negative changes affecting the ecosystem around the world.”.
Announcing that the meeting addressed advancing the environmental program cooperation between the association and the embassy in the future, given that the Environment Society is a key participant in the “Sea Turtle Campaign,” which was launched by the Japanese Society and the Japanese Embassy in Kuwait since 2000, as it is a community environmental work that includes symbolic activities that promote environmental awareness in the field by drawing attention to the importance of coasts, their environments, marine creatures and habitats. The association participates through its specialized educational program «Green Schools,» in addition to its community awareness program «Beach Safari» and the Friends of the Environment team, as well as a distinguished group of members of the committees and volunteer teams in the association and many schools included in the Green Schools program, and volunteer groups, in addition to the participation of many government agencies in the sea turtle operation.
