Dr. Wijdan Aloqab, President of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, affirmed that “the umbrella of promoting a culture of human rights stemming from the State of Kuwait’s vision (New Kuwait 2035) in its seventh pillar, “a sustainable living environment,” as well as participation in executive tasks and even advancing in this field, falls within the human rights of knowledge and community participation.”.
In a press statement on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, which the world celebrates today, Dr. Aloqab pointed out that “the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the inalienable rights that every human being enjoys simply by virtue of being human, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, wealth, birth or any other status,” considering that “environmental human rights are an inherent right that is added to the previous rights, as the environment is an element that is intertwined and interconnected with all areas of life and the dimensions and goals of sustainable development,” calling for “the importance of promoting environmental human rights and enshrining their societal concepts among all sectors and age groups.”.
In this context, she commended the State of Kuwait's efforts in the field of human rights, praising the distinguished and enlightened vision of Her Excellency Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights, whose national and humanitarian commitment reflects Kuwait's progress in this regard. She called for "the importance of integrating environmental rights protection into Kuwait's educational curricula to raise awareness comprehensively, such as through the Arab Environment Day and World Environment Day, and specifically by instilling the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict – November 6 – in the minds of Kuwaiti students, as it represents a Kuwaiti achievement on an international level, reinforcing the concept of the interrelationship between individuals and the environment." She also highlighted "the importance of empowering Kuwaiti women in environmental work, both professionally and socially, to highlight their role in promoting sound environmental practices within their families regarding various environmental issues, particularly their role in addressing climate change and contemporary environmental concerns.".
Dr. Wijdan Aloqab considered that “the practice of community environmental volunteering, which began in the State of Kuwait decades ago, with the Kuwait Environment Protection Society at the forefront of its community initiatives in the country, enhances the environmental rights of citizens and residents.” She noted “the importance of supporting the human right to a safe, healthy, clean and sustainable environment, especially with the growing global interest in the environment in international forums, as well as the environment and climate change.”.
