The Kuwait Environment Protection Society stressed the importance of promoting a culture of disaster prevention and establishing the concepts of early preparedness among various segments of society, emphasizing that building a safe and resilient society begins with raising awareness within the family and home, and extends to institutions, public facilities and various sectors in the country.
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Association, said in a press statement on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, which falls on October 13th of each year, that the slogan of the occasion for 2026, «Prevention starts at home,» embodies the importance of the role that the family plays in protecting its members, by identifying potential risks, taking preventive measures, preparing home emergency plans, and enhancing the ability of family members to act properly when crises and disasters occur.
Al-Aqab revealed that the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, within the framework of its membership in the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction (GNDR), initiated the formation of the National Committee for Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Risk Reduction in the State of Kuwait (GNDR-KUWAIT), with the aim of unifying voluntary and community efforts and enhancing coordination and exchange of experiences among civil entities related to crisis and emergency management and disaster risk reduction.
She explained that the committee includes specialized civil entities, including the Kuwait Fire Service Association and the Kuwait Crisis and Emergency Management Association, which enhances integration between environmental, technical and community expertise, and contributes to developing awareness and training initiatives and building the capacities of volunteers.
She emphasized that these efforts are an extension of the association’s mission in environmental education and awareness, and its belief that protecting the environment and human beings represents an integrated system in which the safety of natural resources is inseparable from the safety of society and the sustainability of basic services.
Al-Aqab concluded her statement by calling for enhanced cooperation between government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, and educational and media institutions to integrate the concepts of prevention and disaster risk reduction into awareness and educational programs, stressing that «prevention is not the responsibility of emergency services alone, but rather a societal culture that begins at home and is reinforced through education, practice, and cooperation, leading to a safer, more prepared, and more resilient nation.».
