Learn about the Kuwait Environment Protection Society

The Kuwait Environment Protection Society was founded on March 31, 1974. The first conference on the human environment, held in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden in 1972, and its resulting resolutions and recommendations for the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme at the global level, with its headquarters in Nairobi, and the encouragement of the establishment of public benefit associations concerned with preserving the environment and combating the causes of pollution at the local and regional levels, served as the starting whistle for the journey of establishing the Kuwait Environment Protection Society. The first stage of this journey was the gathering and consultation of a select group of Kuwaitis who believed in the necessity and importance of working to protect the Kuwaiti environment and preserve all its contents and resources after witnessing the organized global trend towards environmental issues. The initial discussions and meetings of Kuwaitis interested in the environment resulted in a preliminary draft for the establishment of a non-profit Kuwaiti public benefit society concerned with the environment. All the founders' ideas crystallized in a detailed official letter about the nature of the society's work, its objectives, its bodies, committees, working teams, and their tasks. This letter was submitted at that time to the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor with the aim of officially registering the Society for Environmental Protection, and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor issued Law No. (7). In 1974, the actual approval was given to establish the Kuwait Environmental Protection Society, then the name was changed to become the Kuwaiti Environmental Protection Society, and then to the current name, the Kuwait Environment Protection Society.

The Pioneers' Journey Since the Founding

Since its founding, the society has continued its role in protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness in the State of Kuwait. We extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to its founders and former board chairmen for their efforts in laying the foundations of this civic institution since 1974, overcoming all obstacles to achieve a distinguished position for this society among public benefit organizations both within and outside the State of Kuwait.

We pray to God that He will help us to fulfill our responsibilities like those who came before us, so that one day we may lovingly pass on the responsibility to those who come after us to carry the banner.
