Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, confirmed that the Society’s delegation participating in the “COP27” Climate Summit currently being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, is participating in multiple activities in the two zones (Blue Zone and Green Zone) over the two weeks of the summit. She announced that the delegation is headed by her and includes Dr. Shaker Al-Hazim, a member of the Society, Issa Ramadan, a weather forecasting expert and member of the Society, and Eng. Yousef Al-Ramzi, the official spokesperson for the Society’s environmental engineers team.
She added, “The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection is an association accredited to the United Nations as an observer and obtained special seats for civil society organizations during the two weeks of the summit from the eighth to the eighteenth of November.” She continued, “I extend my sincere thanks to the contributors who covered the costs and participation of the Society’s members in the summit, namely the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences and Al-Arfaj Company, for their support of civil activity, which maintains the Society’s position as a leading civil society organization in this field with more than 48 years of experience since its establishment.”.
Dr. Al-Aqab praised the arrangements made to receive delegations from Cairo Airport to Sharm El-Sheikh Airport, appreciating “the attention of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the smallest details regarding the delegations arriving in Sharm El-Sheikh from all parts of the world, especially with the presence of a large number of organizers to receive the delegations at the airport and facilitate their procedures under organized security supervision.”.
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab explained that the delegation, in cooperation with the Arab Network for Environment and Development, organized an international workshop entitled “Challenges related to financing climate change.” She noted that during the workshop, she presented the challenge of “raising environmental awareness through television programs, despite the lack of support that does not cover the high cost of production, and how to overcome this by having supporters for the series of documentary programs on wildlife in the State of Kuwait who cover a large part of those costs, such as the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences and the Environment Protection Fund of the Public Authority for the Environment.”.
She pointed out that she presented to the workshop a model of the challenge, including how the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection overcame it by promoting the concept of environmental volunteering and the values of environmental citizenship, which is why the Society relied on Kuwaiti volunteer cadres who overcame this challenge with them.
She noted that “the association was able to secure a side activity with the rest of the civil society organizations participating in the summit,” announcing that “the association prepared a special dialogue session entitled (Financial Challenges) related to building capacities to adapt to the climate for strength and resilience, with the participation of members of the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) in addition to some Arab universities. This was the first of the events, and the session concluded with a number of inspiring recommendations drawn from the lecturers” experiences to overcome financial difficulties.”.
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab continues to convey the experience as “wonderful,” and said, “The association’s presentation, which addressed the financial difficulties specific to the environmental awareness and media sector and the establishment of a series of documentary programs to raise community awareness and include in the episodes the goals of sustainable awareness and climate action, was well received.” She considered that “proper awareness is the final cover for all governmental, civil and private efforts to inform the community about these efforts and their importance to the citizen and to explain his role in making them successful and benefiting from them.”.
