The Kuwaiti Association for Earth Protection called for making Earth Hour a daily event throughout the year. This call was made by Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, the association's president, during her participation in the Earth Hour celebration on Saturday evening. She said […]
She said, “This year’s Earth Hour event was organized by the Friends of the Environment Society in Abu Dhabi, headed by Chairman of the Board Dr. Ibrahim Ali, and it coincides with the last Saturday of March every year. The event included speeches from a number of heads of boards of directors of Gulf associations, and the presentation of some clips related to raising awareness in the field of rationalizing energy consumption. More than 400 participants from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and some Arab countries took part in the event.”.
She announced that the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection had delivered a speech during the participation that included the importance of the Earth Hour event, explaining that “the goals of this event in rationalizing electricity consumption intersect with the twelfth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is sustainable consumption and production, as an arid region like the Gulf region depends entirely on fossil fuels and electricity in water desalination. Therefore, if one of the most important goals of this event is to rationalize electricity consumption, then the presence of this goal within the Sustainable Development Goals contributes directly to implementing this trend throughout the year, and it is a challenge that we strive to implement.”.
She explained that “the association participated with an awareness flash presentation for Earth Hour, which was well received by the participants,” praising “the twinning agreement signed between the Emirates Environmental Friends Association and the Saudi Environmental Society to exchange experiences.”.
It took the initiative to attract Gulf associations to sign memoranda of understanding and twinning agreements that would benefit all associations. This is a suitable opportunity for environmental associations to join forces in events led and organized by the Gulf Network of Civil Environmental Associations, which was established in 2000.
