The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection concluded its second participation in Expo 2020 Dubai by completing its program plan, which included workshops, lectures, and multiple panel discussions within the activities of the “Urban and Rural Development” week, in front of visitors to the State of Kuwait’s pavilion. Janan Behzad, Secretary General of the Society and Secretary General of the Gulf Network of Environmental NGOs, presented her lecture on the journey, roles, and programs of the network regionally and internationally over the past 20 years.
Behzad addressed a gathering of Gulf academics and youth specializing in environmental sciences, outlining the network's mission (a single entity for joint Gulf action), noting that cooperation among civil environmental associations within the Gulf network focuses on training and localizing scientific expertise and developing young people, with an emphasis on sustainable development to secure a safe and prosperous future for environments and human resources.
She explained that “the network is implementing many forums and conferences, whose recommendations concluded that it needs a regional Gulf environmental civil entity that brings together public benefit associations with environmental specialization that are easy to join in order to exchange experiences and successes and generalize them to the GCC countries, which reflects the need of civil society institutions and their continued demands for the existence of such a Gulf entity to be a melting pot for voluntary environmental activity in the Gulf in order to enhance the goal of honing talents and localizing Gulf expertise in the environmental field, and generalizing successes to solve environmental problems, given the similarity of environments and habitats in the region, and the similarity of weather and climate, and environmental problems,” stressing that the network has directed its invitation to non-member Gulf environmental organizations, whether general or single-activity, to join its membership.
