Documentation of a long-legged buzzard in border areas

The Kuwait Environment Protection Society announced that it had spotted five birds of the “long-legged buzzard” species in the Al-Ratqa sector of the northern border region during the weekly field and outdoor work of both the eighth season of the documentary series on wildlife in the State of Kuwait and the wildlife documentation program in the border regions in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior.

Dr. Abdul-Redha Al-Ramzi, Director of the Environmental Documentation and Media Center at the Society and director of the documentary series on wildlife in the State of Kuwait, said that during one of the external documentation operations for the eighth season of the series, he observed five birds of the “long-legged buzzard” species in the Al-Ratqa sector in the northern border region, where wildlife was documented according to the program for documenting wildlife in border areas. The birds appeared comfortable moving around the place due to the lack of human activity and the tranquility that prevails in the site. He pointed out that through cooperation between the committees and teams of the Society, the documentation of living creatures that are observed during field survey operations is studied with the specialized teams.

For his part, the head of the bird monitoring and protection team, Mohammed Shah, explained that the “Field Guide” to the birds of Kuwait, issued by the association about 10 years ago, describes the “Long-legged Buzzard,” known locally as “Buhaqab or Haqbi,” as a rare transient migrant bird and a rare winter visitor. It is also a regular visitor and is found in the environment of open desert areas with medium and high elevations and trees. It is also found in the State of Kuwait in the “Sabah Al-Ahmad Reserve,” northern Kuwait, Al-Ratqa, and Abraq Al-Jari. He added, “The Long-legged Buzzard reaches a length of approximately 60 to 66 centimeters, and its wings extend between 130 to 155 centimeters. It appears during hovering that the wings are raised high, as has been observed during flight.”

In this regard, the association expresses its highest appreciation to the Ministry of Interior for the logistical support it provides through its various sectors to the team documenting wildlife in the border regions, stressing that the Ministry of Interior is one of the most important and prominent partners of the association in protecting the environment, praising the national contribution of the leaders and members of the ministry who overcome any difficulties and obstacles facing the work team, as well as the knowledge sharing of some members of the border regions from their accumulated experiences resulting from their presence in those regions.
