The Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection announced its participation in the annual beach cleanup campaign, which bears the slogan (Sea Turtles) and is organized annually in cooperation with the embassy, the Japanese Society and the Environment Public Authority, with the participation of many governmental bodies, civil organizations, teams and volunteer groups. This came during the reception of Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Society, and in the presence of board member Janan Behzad, of a delegation from the Japanese Embassy to coordinate on the outlines of organizing the campaign this year, which the Society has been participating in organizing since its launch in 2000.
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab confirmed that “the event will be held on November 19, and the participation in organizing the campaign comes through its social responsibility aimed at promoting volunteer work, especially in the field of protecting the environment from pollution,” noting that “the campaign is organized annually in cooperation with the Japanese Association with the aim of reviving volunteer work, and that the number of volunteers from the association’s teams and committees and school students increases annually,” considering that “organizing the campaign, although symbolic, the message that reaches everyone is the importance of preserving environmental resources and their cleanliness.”.
Dr. Al-Aqab praised the broad participation of entities and individuals, noting “the keenness of the Environmental Police, the Emergency Medical Services Department, and many governmental bodies and volunteer groups to participate in the success of the beach cleanup operation entitled (Operation Turtles), which is concerned with highlighting the dangers of plastic waste to sea turtles, as it constitutes an inherent harm to marine wildlife.”.
For her part, Janan Behzad, Director of Programs and Activities and a member of the Association’s Board of Directors, said that “the event has become a symbolic annual meeting to engage with the status of the environment in sustainable development plans,” explaining that “the Association is a key participant in the Sea Turtle Campaign as it is a community-based environmental work that includes symbolic activities that promote environmental awareness on the ground by drawing attention to the importance of coasts, their environments, marine creatures and habitats.”.
Behzad explained that “the association has prepared for an active participation through its specialized educational program «Green Schools» in its twelfth consecutive season for the current academic year, in addition to its awareness program «Beach Safari», the Friends of the Environment team, the Department of Programs and Activities, Environmental Clubs, and the Youth Empowerment Program, as well as a distinguished group of members of the association’s committees and volunteer teams.”.
She stated that “the joining of many environmental partners to the association falls within the framework of its community roles and contributions towards promoting the environmental dimension in an institutional style and approach,” noting that “the preparation for the sea turtle operation project is done in coordination and setting the program of events and distributing roles between the association and the Japanese Association in Kuwait with representatives from the Japanese Embassy,” noting that the beach cleanup campaign receives a wide presence and interest from various people interested in the Kuwaiti environment.
