The Kuwait Environment Protection Society praised the State of Kuwait’s keenness to organize carnival events that are always known for their creativity and the special charisma they carry for our Kuwaiti society on more than one level, the latest of which was the Kuwait Sports Marathon, which witnessed the patronage and presence of the Prime Minister, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, and a crowd of no less than 13,000 participants.
The Environmental Protection Association commented on the amount of plastic bottle waste resulting from the large number of participants, which was monitored and documented by environmentally conscious citizens after the event, and the Kuwait Municipality thankfully removed it from long distances on the Sheikh Jaber Causeway road later.
She stressed that “piles of water bottles are a waste of natural resources and it would have been better to benefit from the pioneering experience of the Ministry of Interior, which was implemented during the National Day celebrations and which preserved the blessing of water and reduced plastic pollution at the same time,” adding that the location of the event above Kuwait Bay is certainly a key element in facilitating the arrival of plastic waste to the water, which negatively affects the marine environment and the living organisms in it.
The association called on the entities that intend to organize public events in the future to adopt integrated event management by including the environmental aspect through inviting governmental and community environmental bodies and the environmental police, and utilizing volunteer teams to form a work team for supervision, monitoring and environmental awareness in order to preserve the natural resources of the site and reduce waste, as well as limiting environmental violations during the event by introducing the relevant articles of the Environmental Protection Law No. 42 of 2014.
