Her Excellency Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah, Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, met with Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, to discuss the importance of promoting the human right to a safe, healthy, clean and sustainable environment, especially given the growing global interest in the environment in international forums, as well as the environment and climate change.
During their fruitful meeting, both sides discussed the importance of integrating environmental protection into Kuwaiti educational curricula to raise awareness comprehensively, specifically by instilling the concept of World Environment Day in the minds of Kuwaiti students, thereby reinforcing the idea of individual impact on the environment. The meeting also addressed in detail the importance of empowering Kuwaiti women in environmental work, both professionally and within the community, highlighting their role in promoting sound environmental practices within their families regarding various environmental issues, particularly their role in addressing climate change.
Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab confirmed that “the Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah, called for this meeting following the issuance of the Scientific and Applied Society’s “Guide to Women and Climate Change,” where the Assistant Foreign Minister praised the guide for containing many of the tasks and roles that women play towards this issue that is intertwined with all areas of life, considering that this publication is in line with the State of Kuwait’s national and international commitments related to the environment, especially under the umbrella of promoting a culture of human rights emanating from the State of Kuwait’s vision (New Kuwait 2035) in its seventh pillar, “A Sustainable Living Environment,” as well as participating in executive tasks and even taking the lead in this field, as all of this falls within the human rights to knowledge and community participation.”.
Dr. Al-Aqab noted that “the meeting with Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah touched on many of the activities and programs of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society concerned with the participation of female staff in heading specialized teams and committees, applied and research programs, in addition to the membership of 4 female staff members on the Society’s Board of Directors for the first time in its history of more than 50 years.”.
She praised the warm reception and commendation of the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights for the association’s work and its interaction with local, regional and international environmental issues. At the end of the meeting, Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab presented Her Excellency with a diverse collection of specialized publications and issues of the Environment Magazine, which the association has been publishing monthly for 45 years.
