On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, which falls on February 2nd, Dr. Wafaa Behbehani, a member of the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, affirmed that “the Ramsar Convention represents a highly important international framework for protecting wetlands and conserving biodiversity, given the pivotal role these ecosystems play in maintaining ecological balance, supporting environmental security, and mitigating the effects of climate change.” Dr. Behbehani pointed out that “Bubiyan Island is one of the most prominent wetlands in the State of Kuwait, due to its high environmental value. It constitutes a rich natural habitat for many living organisms and a major stopover for migratory birds along global migration routes,” emphasizing that “protecting these areas represents a long-term environmental investment.” She added that “wetlands offer promising opportunities for developing sustainable ecotourism through birdwatching, environmental photography, and educational programs, which contribute to raising environmental awareness in society and promote the concept of a green economy without harming sensitive ecosystems.” She stressed that “wetlands are among the most vital habitats for birds, especially migratory birds, as they provide them with safe environments for feeding, resting and breeding, and are an important environmental indicator that reflects the health of ecosystems, which requires intensifying national efforts to protect and preserve them.”.
