On the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day, the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, through its Chairperson Dr. Wijdan Al-Oqab, emphasized “the importance of protecting migratory birds and preserving their natural migration routes, and promoting community participation in monitoring and documenting birds to support local efforts to preserve biodiversity and protect natural resources.” Dr. Al-Oqab explained that “World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated globally twice a year, on the second Saturday of May and October, coinciding with the spring and autumn migration seasons between the two hemispheres. The aim is to raise global awareness of the importance of protecting migratory birds, preserving their migration routes and natural habitats, and promoting international cooperation and community participation to support monitoring efforts and the preservation of biodiversity.” She added that “protecting migratory birds is a shared responsibility that requires the combined efforts of all entities and citizens to preserve biodiversity and achieve a more sustainable future.” She affirmed that “the volatile regional situation in the Arabian Gulf inevitably impacts the movement of birds and living organisms in general. However, the security situation has prevented the continuation of field monitoring and documentation in some important bird areas and reserves due to their proximity to sensitive security sites. This is something we cannot complain about, especially when it concerns the safety and security of volunteers, birdwatchers, photographers, and documentarians.” She noted that “Kuwait is considered one of the most important countries and migratory routes for birds worldwide, thanks to its unique geographical location in the northern Arabian Gulf. Thousands of migratory birds pass through its lands annually, particularly through coastal areas and wetlands, which serve as key resting and feeding points during their seasonal migrations.” She prayed that “God protect Kuwait, the Gulf countries, their people, and their rulers from all harm. May this crisis pass, and may life return to normal, with field activities resuming stronger than before. Camera lenses have longed to document and monitor the birds seeking safety in Kuwait.”.
