Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, said that the team working on the seventh season of the documentary series on wildlife in the State of Kuwait, during one of its external and field trips to complete the “Every Day Yaal 2” program, organized, in parallel with its assigned tasks, a campaign to clean the Nuwaiseeb beach adjacent to the Nuwaiseeb coastal border center, in cooperation between the Kuwait Environment Protection Society and the Kuwait Municipality, Ahmadi Cleaning Department, Nuwaiseeb Sector, and under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Interior, Land Border Security Sector.
Dr. explained. Al-Aqab explained that “the topography of this beach makes it a breeding ground for marine waste, which is constantly washed ashore by the waves according to the direction of the currents. This has resulted in the accumulation of waste, especially plastic, on this beach over the years. Although cleaning is carried out continuously, the beach continues to receive more waste each time.” She added, “Therefore, this campaign was organized to clean this beach and take advantage of the water currents and the shape of the beach to receive the waste for periodic collection through cooperation between the Kuwait Environment Protection Society and Kuwait Municipality, under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior.” She pointed out that the Kuwait Municipality’s participation consisted of about 20 workers, and the police officers of the Nuwaiseeb Coastal Border Center supervised the site and the cleaning process. She noted, “The Society’s role focused on raising awareness among the participants about the need to stay away from the burrows of the ghost crab that inhabits this beach. Only ten burrows of varying sizes were identified, so it was necessary to warn the participants about these small burrows and to avoid them during the cleaning process.” She explained that “at least 45 large garbage bags were removed, in addition to large pieces of waste, with plastic waste making up the majority of the waste removed.”.
Regarding the participating entities, the head of the Environment Society said: “We commend the cooperation and efforts of the Ministry of Interior’s leadership with the Society and its various committees and teams, especially the team working on the “Every Day, Yal 2” program. At the forefront of these leaders is the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Lieutenant General Essam Al-Nahham, for his continuous follow-up on the team’s work and his keenness to overcome difficulties. We also commend Major General Jamal Al-Sayegh, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry for Traffic and Operations Affairs and the Land Border Security Sector, Colonel Hamed Al-Sawagh, and all members of the Nuwaiseeb Border Center for the success of the cleaning operation under their supervision, and Brigadier General Tawheed Al-Kandari, Director of Public Relations and Security Media.” She added: “We also extend our praise for the excellent cooperation of Kuwait Municipality, led by its Director General, Engineer Ahmed Al-Manfouhi, and the Ahmadi Governorate Cleaning Department, Nuwaiseeb Sector, for their quick response and interaction with the plan developed to preserve this beach.” She pointed out that the cleaning operation was carried out in accordance with all preventive health requirements, through everyone’s commitment to wearing masks and maintaining social distancing between workers and participants.
