23 trainees in a course on remote sensing technology applications in the marine environment

The Kuwait Environment Protection Society, in cooperation with the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment, organized a joint training course on “Remote Sensing Technology Applications on the Marine Environment” over three consecutive days, under the supervision of the organization’s remote sensing expert, Dr. Waheed Mohammed Mufaddal, during the period from March 5 to 7 at the organization’s headquarters located in the Granada area.

Dr. Jassim Bishara, the Executive Secretary of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment, opened the session with a speech in which he welcomed the participants, explaining that the session enriches the efficiency and competence of the participants, especially since it includes 3 main axes on “the basics and principles of remote sensing, sources of satellite images and methods of obtaining them, as well as applications of satellite images on the coastal environment.”.

For his part, Nawaf Al-Muwail, Programs Coordinator at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Specialized Environmental Training, affirmed that “the center, which is affiliated with the association, aims to attract talents and personnel to enrich specialized training and provide it to many entities that have shown great interest in participating by nominating beneficiaries of these workshops.” He explained that “the association, through the training center, offers an intensive practical program presented by a select group of trainers from the center’s staff and trainers from specialists from various state entities, which helps in providing and creating new opportunities and developing high-quality scientific skills, especially in the field of using modern technologies.”.

Al-Muwail added that the “Monitoring the Marine Environment by Remote Sensing Station” course saw the participation of 23 trainees from 9 government agencies, namely the National Guard, the Environmental Police Department of the Ministry of Interior, Kuwait University, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, the Ministry of Education (Technical Guidance and Teachers), the Meteorological Department of Civil Aviation, the Environment Public Authority, the Red Crescent, and the Ministry of Health.

“During its three-day duration,” Al-Muwail stated, “the course focused on introducing trainees to the main elements of remote sensing systems, satellite orbits and the characteristics of captured satellite images, methods of processing satellite images and analyzing their data digitally, as well as the components and operating system of satellite and aerial receiving stations, virtual receiving stations and specialized web browsers, satellite image providers, and other sources.” Dr. Waheed Mufaddal and Engineer Elias Al-Alani covered these elements and trained participants on how to apply remote sensing and satellite imagery technology in monitoring risks that threaten the marine environment.

In this context, Dr. Mufaddal stated that “the course presented applications of satellite imagery on the coastal and marine environment by addressing the most important specialized sensors in monitoring the marine environment and measuring marine parameters and variables, as well as various examples and case studies of the uses of satellite imagery and its application to the marine environment, and the role of the organization’s remote sensing unit in monitoring marine violations and reporting cases of marine pollution and other violations to which the organization’s marine area is exposed.”.
