Dr. Wajdan Al-Aqab, President of the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, emphasized the importance of Kuwait Oil Company's commitment as a national and strategic supporter of the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. She commended the company's support for media materials that can be used for awareness and education on this topic, specifically mentioning the film "Kuwait Fires" by director David Douglas. She also praised the Scientific Center for screening the film on IMAX screens, noting that the General Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development at the League of Arab States commended Kuwait Oil Company's support for these media materials, which preserve Kuwait's environmental heritage and history through the awareness film being shown at the Scientific Center in celebration of this annual event. Dr. Al-Aqab recalled that at the beginning of the new millennium, Kuwaiti diplomacy, under the leadership of the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, adopted the initiative of Kuwaiti civil society, spearheaded by the Kuwaiti Society for Environmental Protection, and subsequently mobilized diplomatic efforts until the UN resolution designating November 6th as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. She explained that “the 24th edition of the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict comes this year bearing a resounding humanitarian message: our condemnation, rejection, and denunciation of the violation of our personal, societal, and international peace, let alone the violation of our natural and environmental resources and the resources of future generations, through the dozens of wars that plague and afflict our planet Earth.” She added, “The deliberate use of the environment as a tool of war inevitably threatens water and food security, contributes to the spread of diseases, hinders efforts to combat climate change, degrades environments, leads to the loss of biodiversity, and causes suffering from pollution on land, sea, and air. As for the displacement, migration, and refuge resulting from these conflicts, I emphasize that receiving and sheltering a large number of refugees in small Arab countries leads to serious social, economic, environmental, and demographic repercussions, as well as putting pressure on natural resources.”.
